TAKKUUK - Screening
TAKKUUK is a collaborative video installation by BICEP, visual artist Zak Norman and filmmaker Charlie Miller that explores the lives, communities and challenges facing artists Indigenous to the Arctic Region.
Indigenous communities, though contributing minimally to global consumption, often bear the brunt of its harshest consequences. Increasing political and economic attention is being directed towards the Arctic, mainly from external actors, resulting in a surge of industrial activity and social interest. Languages are deeply tied to traditional lifestyles, supporting their cultural vibrancy, and overall quality of life. These languages are shaped by the environment, homelands, and the profound relationship indigenous peoples have with nature.
In the Arctic, many languages contain dozens, even hundreds, of terms to describe their unique natural surroundings, terms that are essential for many traditional practices that rely on understanding specific pastures and weather patterns. Changes in climate, along with political indifference pose a significant threat to these languages and the people who speak them. When culture evolves or disappears, the language often follows suit.
Created in partnership with the charity In Place of War, as part of their EarthSonic programme, the video installation sees the renowned Northern Irish electronic duo BICEP — otherwise known as Andy Ferguson and Matthew McBriar — collaborating with a number of Indigenous vocalists, including Katarina Barruk, Andachan, Sebastian Enequist (from Sound of the Damned), Tarrak, Nuija, Niilas and Silla.

From melting glaciers in Iceland, droughts in Brazil, and flooding rivers in the UK, to rising sea levels in Bangladesh, water is carrying an important message about the climate crisis and the planetary health - and we are here to amplify her voice and let her be heard.
Through the power of music, six artists from Brazil, Iceland, the UK and Bangladesh - Bebé Salvego, Keila, Valdis, Birna, OneDa and Sohini Alam - will translate the strength and struggles of their territories into powerful performances during London Action Climate Week, calling for the protection of waters, women’s rights, health and climate Justice.
